How to Stay Active in the Colder Months

When it is cold and grey out it can be more difficult to get yourself moving, use these tips to keep up with your fitness goals

As the weather gets colder and the sunlight hours get shorter, it can feel like a great time to hibernate on the couch with a warm drink instead of going out to get exercise. While cold weather may make you want to stay bundled up inside, staying active during the colder months is essential for your physical and mental health.

Layer Up to Go Out

Have you ever heard the phrase “there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes”? One of the biggest obstacles to getting outside is the chill in the air, but it doesn’t have to stop you from staying active. When you layer your clothes, you can stay warmer and also have the option of removing layers as you need.

  • Base Layer: Start with moisture-wicking materials that keep sweat off your skin. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and can make you feel cold.

  • Middle Layer: Add a breathable, insulating layer like fleece or wool to keep warmth in without overheating.

  • Outer Layer: Choose a windproof, waterproof jacket to protect yourself from the elements, especially on windy days or if you're caught in a drizzle.

Winter-Friendly Outdoor Activities

When considering going out to do exercise, the idea that it might be more uncomfortable to do so might stop you from going out. However, changing your mindset about cold weather activity may help you embrace the weather and maintain your fitness goals.

  • Walking or Running: Cold weather can actually make these activities feel more invigorating, and makes you appreciate the warm indoors when you are finished.

  • Hiking: Less people on the trail means more opportunities for you to enjoy the peaceful, scenic environment while you hike the trails.

  • Biking: As long as the path isn’t icy, you can still enjoy an energizing ride

  • Cold Plunge: Many people are now discovering the benefits of taking a dip in chilly water. If you have access to a body of water or a bath tub, you can try it out for yourself. Just make sure you are safe when doing so.

  • Winter Sports: One of the best ways to embrace the cold outdoors is to find a winter sport that you enjoy. It could be snowshoeing, ice skating, or sledding.

Indoor Activities

When the cold is just too much, it’s time to turn to indoor workouts. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of ways to stay fit inside. You don't need a fancy gym or equipment to get a great workout. There are plenty of youtube channels with free workouts that you can try from the comfort of your own home.

  • Bodyweight Exercises: Push-ups, squats, lunges, burpees, and planks are all effective bodyweight exercises that can be done in the comfort of your home. These exercises build strength, endurance, and flexibility without needing a gym membership or equipment.

  • Yoga or Pilates: Winter is a great time to stretch and focus on flexibility. Yoga and Pilates are perfect for indoor practice, helping you maintain balance, improve flexibility, and reduce stress.

  • Dance or Zumba: If you're looking for a fun way to stay active indoors, try dance workouts or Zumba. These classes are full of energy, help improve cardiovascular fitness, and keep you moving to the beat.

  • Stair Climbing or Jump Rope: If you have stairs at home or a nearby indoor space, stair climbing is an excellent way to boost your cardiovascular fitness. Similarly, skipping rope is a great calorie burner that can be done indoors with minimal space.

Set Yourself Up For Success

One of the challenges of staying active during the colder months is maintaining motivation. The darker, colder days can sap your energy, but setting realistic fitness goals and creating a structured routine can help you stay on track.

  • Set Goals: Make sure your goals are small and realistic so you will be able to achieve them. As your exercise becomes a routine, it will become easier and easier to do it. Make sure to track your progress so you can feel accomplished.

  • Workout Buddy: When you enlist a friend to workout with you and keep you accountable, it’ll be easier for both of you to stay motivated and reach your goals.

  • Fitness Apps: There are many fitness apps out there that can help you track your progress, send you reminders, and keep you motivated to continue exercising.

And finally, remember, the winter won’t last forever but your fitness habits can! Stay motivated, stay warm, and most importantly - stay active.
